Dubai Knowledge Village and Medelec join impressive speaker list at SMART metering event in Dubai in May
Saturday, March 28, 2009 (89 reads)

The Smart Metering Middle East and Smart Grids Middle East 2009 conference has announced that top representatives from Dubai Knowledge Village and Medelec have joined the already impressive list of “smart speakers” for this niche event on 4-6 May 2009 in Dubai, UAE. Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director of Dubai Knowledge Village and Francois Meslier from France, Acting Secretary General of Medelec, representing the Mediterranean electrical industry, will address the conference in what promises to be a groundbreaking event for the region.
Globally it is becoming clear that the smart grid will be one of the networks of the future and that utilities are turning their attention to the smart grid as a tool for energy monitoring and management. The meter is also seen as a key component of the energy management infrastructure.
Smart Metering Middle East and Smart Grids Middle East 2009 will showcase new trends and technologies and the latest and biggest industry names for the utilities industry in the Middle East.
Other international experts and industry-elite speakers that will address delegates in Dubai are:
• Ali Saleh Al Barrak, CEO of Saudi Arabia’s Electricity Company, Saudi Arabia
• Mohamed Helmy, Chief Executive Officer, BPL Global Middle East, Kuwait
• Ali Mouslmani, Regional Director, Elster Electricity L.L.C, Dubai, UAE
• Pier Nabuurs, Chief Executive Officer, KEMA Consulting, The Netherlands
• Salam Zagha, General Manager, Northern Electricity Distribution Co (NEDCO), Nablus, Palestine
Middle East Energy Challenges
“The rate of real estate development in the Middle East today is placing utilities under increasing pressure to monitor energy consumption in a cost-efficient way”, says Nicholas McDiarmid, Editor of Metering International, the publication that is hosting the event. He adds that: “the Middle East is facing its own energy challenges and utilities across the region are rapidly to Smart Energy technologies, including Smart Meters, Advanced Metering Infrastructure and energy management systems to both realise the benefits of Smart Metering as well as to enhance energy efficiency”.
Even the wealthiest of the economies, such as Saudi Arabia is finding it extremely difficult to continue making large scale investments in their power sector. In 2005 Saudi Arabia and other countries such as Lebanon, Qatar and Yemen encountered major power shortage. Not surprisingly, the less wealthy countries are finding it more difficult to manage their power shortages by expanding supply.
A truly smart grid infrastructure
Smart Metering Middle East and Smart Grids Middle East 2009 will showcase how the smart grid will offer smart meter features which will allow both users and utilities to utilise information about usage, supply and real time price, as well as allowing them to better manage energy use both from an end user and a supply perspective.
Delegates will have an opportunity to hear from a group of over 40 industry-elite speakers that will take an in depth look at the current challenges being faced by utilities concerning the achievement of a truly smart grid infrastructure. Regulatory policy, business case rationale and systems integration issues affecting the achievement of a smart grid will be discussed in light of attaining maximum benefits from the implementation of a genuine smart grid infrastructure within distribution.
The programme’s specific focus area will be on smart metering, utilities’ future requirements, AMR, the role of prepayment within the smart grid, new technologies for the next generation distribution utility and much more. The brochure for Smart Metering Middle East and Smart Grids Middle East 2009 is now available and can be downloaded from the event website: www.metering.com/sgme
Metering International Excellence Awards - Middle East 2009
The winners of the Metering International awards programme will also be announced during the conferences. The Metering International Excellence Awards recognise and encourage excellence in the Middle East’s utilities sector in three categories: Leadership, Metering Project and Metering Technology.
